What to think about
What makes a
good
web site?
Content is king!
- The content should be useful to your visitor as well as sell
your company's products or services.
- The home page especially, should be attractive and quick to
load. First impressions count.
- What is the over-riding purpose of your web site? Make sure
the contents of your site emphasis this and do not distract from
it.
- A visitor to your web site wants to find what he or she
is looking for quickly. Therefore, text should be short and to the
point and navigation should be clear and consistent over all the
site. Gushing prose may
be appropriate in a brochure, but not on a web site.
- Make sure your text includes important key words that searches
will use in a search engine.
- Different companies target different customers. Know your
customer. Make sure your web site will appeal to your target
customer.
- Every company is different and your web page should be as
individual as you. Make sure your web site incorporates your
branding and identity.
Making your web site user-friendly
Think of your visitors
- The web site should be appealing to your visitors. Your
design and content should reflect the taste and life-style of your target customers.
Make sure you are clear about who they are.
- Don't annoy your visitors. For example, scrolling horizontally
is very annoying to the user and we always try to avoid this.
- We don't include
slow-loading elements which are not necessary. They may look
pretty and show how clever we are, but is it what the user wants?
Not
everyone is on broadband just yet.
- The user needs to find things easily. So, navigation should be
clear, consistent and informative.
- Don't lose customers because your web is not accessibility
compliant. Can blind people access your site? The government and
society at large encourage businesses to make sure their web site
is accessibility compliant. It may even become law one day. Make
sure your site complies from the word go.
- Make sure your web site is easy to navigate, information is
easy to find. Don't frustrate your visitors.
- More and more people will be surfing the web on their mobiles or
pda. Check that your web site displays properly in such a device.
